It is effective at extracting a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes. It does require additional steps for careful handling and purification because of the risk of residual solvents and flammability concerns.
- Ethanol Extraction. Ethanol, a type of alcohol, is used to extract CBD by soaking the plant material. The ethanol is then evaporated, leaving behind the CBD oil. This process is efficient and effective at extracting a full range of cannabinoids and terpenes. It’s also relatively safe and cost-effective. It can, however, extract chlorophyll, which may give the oil a bitter taste.
- Oil Extraction. This method involves using a carrier oil, such as olive oil, to extract CBD. The plant material is heated to activate the cannabinoids, then mixed with the carrier oil and heated again. Most home extractors use this method because it is simple and safe, and the resulting product is free from harmful solvents. The disadvantage though is that the final product is less concentrated, and the oil has a shorter shelf life.
- Solventless Extraction. This method extracts hemp flower without using chemical solvents like CO2, ethanol, or hydrocarbons (e.g., butane, propane). Instead, these methods rely on physical or mechanical means to separate the desired compounds from the cannabis plant. Examples of this method are rosin pressing, dry sifting, and ice water extraction (bubble hash). These methods often produce a high quality full spectrum concentrate that retains the plant’s natural terpenes and cannabinoids, but it is labor intensive and requires precise temperature control.
CBD OIL VS. HEMP SEED OIL
CBD Oil is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the hemp plant. The resulting extract contains high levels of cannabidiol (CBD) and other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids. It is commonly used for its potential therapeutic benefits, including pain relief, anxiety reduction, and anti-inflammatory properties. The extraction method is usually CO2, hydrocarbons, or ethanol.
Hemp Seed Oil, on the other hand, is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. It contains no CBD or other cannabinoids but is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.
It is often used as a nutritional supplement, in cooking, and in skincare products for its moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties. The oil is cold pressed from hemp seeds, similar to how olive oil is made.
